September is here signaling the start of balmy days and cool nights which is ideal for undertaking gardening and landscaping projects. This year’s summer weather was not ideal for gardening which is why it is understandable that many gardeners are excited about the prospect of finally doing gardening and landscaping projects.
September is usually the preferred month for gardeners to renovate their lawns and gardens, prepare new gardens and transplant perennials. So what makes September the preferred month of the year to renovate and rejuvenate a garden?
During this month, soils are warm and easy to work on. This helps the plant become readily established. Additionally, rainfall during this month is just enough to moisten a newly seeded lawn and provide hydration to new plantings.
If you are a neophyte gardener, renovating and rejuvenating your garden may seem to be a daunting task. That is why you need all the help that you can get when gardening in autumn. Start first by inspecting the clutter created at your garden during summertime. For this task you need a notebook and camera for a quick survey. Make a list of priority things to do in your garden.
Keep in mind that even a well-cared garden needs occasional changes as plants mature. A facelift is a common factor in most successful gardens. This is to make sure that a garden will be given a new vitality and fresh style. You can replenish the depleted soils on low-maintenance perennials such as hostas, Siberian iris and daylilies. These perennials will thrive for a long time undisturbed but a total renovation may be needed, especially if aggressive grasses or weeds have infiltrated and started to crowd out and smother even your hardiest plants in the garden.
If you have newer perennials in your garden, you may only need few modifications such as minimal transplanting or introduction of compact woody plants. Dwarf conifers are ideal because they will provide winter interest and structure and may be a solution to color clashes. They are also needed to strengthen a pattern or modify space and height arrangements.
You can plant existing perennials in the replenish soil. Do not forget to apply mulch over the replenished soil to reduce weeds, provide winter protection and retain moisture.
Gardening in autumn can be a lot of hard work but it will be worth it when you start to see a healthy and rejuvenated garden full of colorful flowers next season.
